Dubai plans miniature city on planet Mars
The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has announced intentions to build a “miniature city” on Mars within the next 100 years, reports Arabian Business.
Sheikh Mohammed, who also serves as the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, launched the project at the World Government Summit.
Entitled the 2117 Mars project, the endeavor aims to develop scientific capabilities, and may result in the conversion of local universities into research facilities.
The project will focus on parallel research into exploring means of mobility, housing, energy and food as well as speeding up the time it takes to travel to the planet.
“There are no limits to the imagination and aspirations of human beings,” he tweeted.

The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour
Iconic new addition to Dubai’s skyline, ‘The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour’ for Emaar Properties.
Because of the height and design of the structure, ground engineering is critical in the programme schedule and foundation design. “We deployed resources and expertise to meet a demanding design programme and to ensure the results of the site investigation were of the highest quality,” explained Peter Brooke, Fugro’s Business Delivery Manager.
The scope of works included over 4,800 metres of triple tube coring to depths of up to 200 metres and 225 in situ pressure meter tests. A full range of standard and specialist geotechnical laboratory testing was undertaken on the recovered core. To complete the campaign, Fugro carried out downhole P and S suspension logging.
Fugro has conducted an extensive geotechnical investigation campaign for this new Dubai building. This programme represents one of the most comprehensive geotechnical investigations undertaken in the region and the acquired information will be the base for the foundation and piling designs.

O-14 tower Dubai – 5 Oct 2012
O-14 is a twenty-two storey tall commercial tower perched on a two-storey podium in the heart of Dubai’s Business Bay. O-14 comprises 300,000 square feet and is a collaboration between RUR Architecture of New York and the Creek Side Development Company of Dubai. O-14 is located along the extension of Dubai Creek, occupying a prominent location on the waterfront esplanade. The design of O-14 fundamentally shifts away from the architectural norm in current Dubai towers by eliminating the now obligatory curtain wall and above ground parking in favor of a shade-producing, concrete load-bearing shell and an open public space at the tower base achieved by moving the parking below ground.
