In a tragic start to the New Year, tens of thousands of people gathered to watch Dubai’s famed firework display but witnessed explosions of a different kind after The Address – a giant highrise next to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai – burst into flames. Fire climbed the Address hotel, a sixty-three story, five-star, joint hotel and residential building, resulting in sixteen reported injuries related to overcrowding and smoke, as well as one heart attack.

Clean energy report: a closer look at renewables in the United States

united states renewable energy, renewable energy states, department of energy, paris climate talks, international climate deal

The past two weeks, we’ve heard a lot from world leaders in Paris about a global strategy to address climate change. The talks have been full of scrutiny surrounding carbon emissions, fossil fuel usage, clean energy projects, and conservation. As President Obama pressures government leaders of less developed nations to clamp down on emissions and invest more in renewable energy, many will be looking to the United States to see what kind of progress has been made toward a cleaner future. Renewable energy is on the rise in some states, while other regions still cling to dirty fossil fuels. Here’s a deeper look into who is doing it right, who is lagging behind, and what the future looks like in the American energy scene.

Move over Bloody Marys – Asparagus is the new hangover cure

There’s a new cure for champagne-induced New Year’s Eve hangovers. We used to think that Bloody Marys or a cup of coffee were miracle hangover cures, but new research shows that a few stalks of asparagus might do a better job. In a recent study by the Institute of Food Technologists, researchers found that amino acids in the hearty vegetable help the body metabolize alcohol more quickly while protecting liver cells at the same time.

The Address, Dubai

Architects: Atkins

Atkins was responsible for the architectural and engineering design of this five star hotel and serviced apartment building located in the prestigious Business Bay area. The development comprises a business centre, health club and spa, a restaurant and parking bays for 900 cars.

The Address is a mixed-use, 63 storey tower comprising a 198 key, 5 star hotel plus 626 serviced apartments. The imposing 306m height and striking design produce a landmark project that stands at the opposite end of the lake to the world’s tallest building, the Burj Dubai.

The floor plate of the The Address hotel is based on an organic evolution of a series of linked arcs which present imposing interconnected double and triple volume public spaces with full views of the lake and Burj Dubai tower; this concept is also extended to the guest room levels. Rising above the hotel is an aerofoil-shaped tower that accommodates 45 levels of deluxe serviced apartments.

Our Carbon Critical DesignTM ethos ensured features such an air condition condensation recovery process that captures enough water to service the irrigation needs of the whole building.

Facilities provided in The Address building also include:

Commissionary kitchen and extensive back of house facilities
Central laundry which has the capacity to service not only the needs of the 5 star hotel but also four other hotels in the surrounding area
All day dining restaurant
1,100 sq m swimming pool with pool bar
Ballroom and support facilities
Club lounge

The now complete hotel supports the needs of up to 4,000 people who work, live and play in the building, every day.

In meeting the ambitious design programme and providing innovative cost solutions along the way, Atkins built a strong foundation with the client, and are now working together on other exciting new initiatives.

O-14 tower Dubai – 5 Oct 2012
O-14 is a twenty-two storey tall commercial tower perched on a two-storey podium in the heart of Dubai’s Business Bay. O-14 comprises 300,000 square feet and is a collaboration between RUR Architecture of New York and the Creek Side Development Company of Dubai. O-14 is located along the extension of Dubai Creek, occupying a prominent location on the waterfront esplanade. The design of O-14 fundamentally shifts away from the architectural norm in current Dubai towers by eliminating the now obligatory curtain wall and above ground parking in favor of a shade-producing, concrete load-bearing shell and an open public space at the tower base achieved by moving the parking below ground.
